An Epidemiological Study on Tooth Loss and Prosthodontic Care among Industrial Workers Exposed to Acids in Korea

Abstract
The extent of tooth loss has been thought an overall indicator of dental health and prosthodontic status & need can also be accepted as an another indicator of rehabilitation of lost dental function. The purpose of this study is to obtain basic data for developing the preventive measures ameliorating oral health problems among workers exposed to acids in Korea. Authors examined 953 acid-exposed workers selected by cluster sampling among 34 factories using acid in 1993. Indices on status and causes of tooth loss & those on prothodontic status and needs were calculated and analyzed by age, sex and years of employment.
Results obtained and indices discussed were as follows:
1. The percentage of persons with tooth loss was 42.8% and mean number of tooth loss 1.09.
2. - The major causes of tooth loss were dental caries and periodontal disease.
3. The percentage of persons having fixed bridge, that of persons needing fixed bridge, mean number of tooth in fixed bridge and mean number of tooth needed in fixed bridge was 24.3%, 18.7%, 1.14 and 0.97, respectively.
4. The percentage of persons wearing removable partial denture was 0.6% and that of persons needing removable partial denture 2.5%.5. No one can be found that wears or needs full denture.
6. The prosthodontic need among workers exposed to acid was 2 times higher than that of general public.
7. There was no scientific evidence that the duration of acid-exposed labour influenced on tooth loss.
8. To prevent tooth loss, incremental dental care program should be developed in each woking place.
8. To increase rehabilitating the lost tooth function, prosthodontic treatment should be provided as a benefit of national health insurance.
